What is a Birthday Earth Image?

You can create a simulated image of the earth, as it really looked at your desired date and time, from above your desired location. You can preview the image as often as you like. You can download your high resolution JPEG image immediately after purchase.

The cloud maps are created from weather satellite images provided by the Geostationary Satellite Imagery page at Dundee University. Our archive contains cloud maps for every six hours since January of 2002. If you are requesting an image for a date that is unavailable, we will generate your picture using an alternate cloud image. In general, that will be the cloud map for the same date in 2008. The date of the cloud map is displayed just below the image on the preview page.

How do you know that's what the earth really looked like?

This is the most common question we get! A full description is here.

How can I make an image?

All you need to know is the date to create an image using our Quick "Create an image" page. If you would like to have a more accurate image using the longitude, latitude, and time, we recommend you use the Detailed "Create an image" page. Both options allow you to create beautiful, high resolution images that can be customized with your baby's name or a welcome message.

How big are the images?

Our standard product is a 2400x1920 pixel JPEG image, which can be used to create prints up to 16"x20" in size. If you would like a larger JPEG file, please contact us for a custom order.

What can I do with the JPEG image? Do you sell T-shirts, mugs, etc?

You can create, download, and print your image in minutes from your home computer and printer or upload your image to your favorite photo printing website and create photo products such as birth announcements, mouse pads, t-shirts, mugs, and canvases. We ask that the images be used for non-commercial use only.

We have partnered with SnapGalaxy to make prints and other products from your Birthday Earth Image. Once you purchase your image from us, you will be sent a link to automatically upload your image to SnapGalaxy to order any additional products you might like.

How much does a Birthday Earth Image cost?

Each image is $7.95 USD and may be purchased using PayPal. During 2012 you can enter the promotional code BABY12 for an additional 10% off.

How are the images created?

This site uses Xplanet to draw its images. Xplanet is a solar system simulator that allows you to see what any planet in our solar system looks like, at any time, from any point in space. It has been freely available since 1999 and has many thousands of users all over the world.

There's a big streak in my image!

Sometimes the satellites transmit bad images. We try to clean them up, but you've caught one we missed! Send us an email at birthdayearth@gmail.com along with your invoice number and we'll send you a clean image using a cloud map as close as possible to your desired date and time.

What about pictures of the moon/planets/solar system?

It's possible to use Xplanet to draw any body in the solar system, or even the whole solar system. The automated interface only allows drawing an image of the earth, but if you have something else in mind, send us an email at birthdayearth@gmail.com and we'll try to accomodate you.
